A Quonset Hut is a lightweight structure that is sturdier than most buildings due to the arch style fabrications that are made from corrugated galvanized steel or iron. The steel buildings are named after the town of Quonset Point in Rhode Island where they were originally manufactured during and after World War II.

During World War II, U.S. Military officials realized they had an increasing demand for a multi-purpose, easy to erect lightweight fortified steel building that could be shipped rapidly anywhere around the world to support our military. The Quonset Hut building concept was designed and closely modeled after the Nissen hut, which was used by the British military during World War I.

The clear span, open design of these Quonset Huts allowed the military to take full advantage of the building’s interior usable space. The military community also realized that the corrugated arch is easily one of the most durable structural designs in the world. Because of these unique qualities, Quonset Huts were able to deliver and meet the demand of much-needed secure shelter during the past and current wars and are still the most widely used structure at any military installation.
